Aviation Scholarships for Non-Airline Careers in Canada — Helicopter, AME, RPAS, ATC, and More

Not everyone wants to fly an Airbus into Pearson. This guide covers helicopter pilot scholarships in Canada, AME scholarships in Canada, drone pilot scholarships in Canada, and funding for ATC, dispatch and float flying — the careers beyond the classic airline path. Helicopter, float, drones, AME, ATC, dispatch and airport operations are all solid Transport Canada-linked careers — and there are Canadian scholarships aimed directly at them. This guide shows where the money really is outside the classic airline path.

Helicopter pilot scholarships in Canada

Helicopter training in Canada typically costs 2–3× fixed-wing training (helicopter PPL $35,000–$45,000 minimum; helicopter CPL $80,000+), so even relatively small scholarships have outsized impact.

BCAC Emil Oucharek Memorial Rotary Scholarship — $1,875. For BC/Yukon residents training toward helicopter CPL who already hold PPL(H); part of the annual BCAC endowment programme (application window February 1 to April 30).BCAC Bain and Brown Aviation Career Scholarship — $20,000 progressive. Open to both fixed-wing and rotary-wing students; structured PPL–CPL–IFR funding for airline-track or commercial helicopter careers.Alberta AAD CPL/Advanced Training Scholarship — 2 × $1,000. For Alberta residents training toward CPL or advanced ratings in either fixed-wing or rotary-wing programmes.Helijet AME/IFR/eVTOL Training Bursary — $5,000 (BC). Supports IFR training for helicopter pilots as well as AME maintenance on emerging eVTOL platforms — a forward-looking category worth watching. Administered through BCAC.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) scholarships

AMEs — including structures, powerplant and avionics technicians — benefit from some of the largest and most diverse scholarship support in Canada.

Coulson Aviation AME-Structures Career Scholarship — $54,000. One of the largest single aviation scholarships in the country, supporting AME-Structures training through BCAC.Harbour Air AME Awards — 2 × $3,000 plus apprenticeship (visit bcaviationcouncil.org for current amounts). Multi-thousand-dollar awards combined with a paid six-month apprenticeship at Harbour Air’s maintenance facilities; details vary year to year.Helijet AME/IFR/eVTOL Bursary — $5,000. BCAC-administered bursary supporting AME students in both conventional and eVTOL maintenance — a future-facing category.Air Canada AME scholarships at 7 colleges — $1,500 each. For AME students at BCIT, Northern Lights College, École Nationale d’Aérotechnique (ÉNA), Centennial, Fanshawe, Canadore and Mohawk, with a diversity focus.Alberta AAD AME Avionics Scholarship — $1,000. For AME-bound students in TC-approved programmes, particularly SAIT. Note: Avionics (AME-E licence) is a distinct stream from structural and powerplant maintenance (AME-M1/M2/S) — check eligibility carefully as some awards specify the stream.AMFA National Scholarship — $2,000 (visit amfa.com for current amounts). For students at any TC-approved AME programme in Canada.BC Coast 99s Wings & Wrench Scholarship — $1,000. Specifically bridges pilot and AME categories; partnered with Geoff Latter Airshows. Good option for women in maintenance as well as flight training.

RPAS and drone pilot scholarships

RPAS is the fastest-growing group of Transport Canada credentials, yet only a handful of scholarships specifically target drone pilots. That makes competition relatively low compared to fixed-wing.

COPA Drone Pilot Scholarship. Training package for three COPA members aged 18+ to obtain the Advanced RPAS pilot certificate, including ground school, flight review and exam fees. No fixed dollar value — the award covers the training package.Alberta AAD RPAS/UVS Robotics Scholarship — $1,000. For Alberta residents pursuing Basic or Advanced RPAS certificates. (check the Alberta AAD website for current details) — the RPAS wording in the programme has been updated periodically.

Many general aviation scholarships now include RPAS or drone in their eligible training types; the scholarship directory tags these so you can search for them even when they are not exclusively drone-only awards.

ATC, flight dispatch, and aviation management

ATC and Flight Service Specialists (FSS) are trained and employed directly by NAV CANADA, which typically covers training costs itself rather than offering external scholarships; this is why stand-alone “ATC school scholarships” are rare in Canada.

However, there are still relevant funding angles:

Elevate Aviation bursaries explicitly list ATC and ATC-track students among eligible careers, especially for women and under-represented groups.Airport operations and management scholarships through BCAC — including Airports Committee ops/management awards and airport-management bursaries from YCD Nanaimo and YPK Pitt Meadows — support students in aviation management, dispatch and airport-ops programmes.College aviation-management programmes (Seneca, BCIT, Georgian) often have internal bursaries open to dispatch and operations students; these appear in the directory when tagged as management or airport_ops.Flight Dispatch (Flight Operations Officer / FOO) is a TC-licensed profession with very few named scholarships; most students rely on broader aviation or management bursaries plus general college awards. Float and bush flying — regional and northern careers

Float and bush flying is central to Canadian aviation, especially in BC, Manitoba, Ontario and the North.

MAC Wings Over Kississing Float Endorsement Scholarship. Funds a float-plane endorsement combined with a summer employment opportunity in northern Manitoba — an ideal stepping-stone into bush flying that combines training funding with real operational experience.Northern and Indigenous scholarships such as Calm Air Carl Morberg and Canadian North Bursary support northern airline, bush and medevac pathways — not just straight airline careers.

Regional float and bush operators in BC and Ontario sometimes partner with councils or schools to sponsor float endorsements or time-building; these often appear under BCAC or local college awards rather than as stand-alone scholarships.
