Eligibility by training path
No licence yet (starting out): COPA Neil J. Armstrong Ab-Initio, BCAC Anderson Family PPL, MAC PPL, Alberta AAD Emerging Aviator, Air Access Bursary at MRU. Typical requirements: minimum age (often 16–18), Canadian citizenship or PR, enrolment or acceptance at a Canadian flight school.
Have PPL, building hours: COPA Advanced Flight Training, BCAC Bain & Brown Career Scholarship, Alberta AAD Commercial Pilot Advanced Training, Wings of Opportunity Night Rating. Require proof of PPL, current logbook, and progress toward CPL or ratings.
CPL track: Jazz APP awards, BCAC multi-IFR and CPL awards, airline-pathway college programmes. Require enrolment in a recognised CPL or ATPL programme.
AME — Aircraft Maintenance Engineer: AMFA National, AME Association of Ontario, Harbour Air and Helijet AME bursaries, Alberta AAD AME Avionics, Air Canada AME scholarships, and large maintenance awards like the Coulson AME-Structures Career Scholarship. All require enrolment in TC-approved AME programmes. Note: Avionics (AME-E licence) is a distinct category from structural and powerplant maintenance (AME-M1/M2/S). Some awards specifically target avionics students — check eligibility carefully.
RPAS / Drone: Transport Canada Basic and Advanced RPAS certificates are now covered by dedicated scholarships. The Mark Cuss Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) via the Aerial Evolution Association of Canada is specifically for RPAS and drone technology students (visit aerialevolution.ca for current amounts). Alberta AAD offers an RPAS-specific award. This is the fastest-growing TC certification category and one of the least-served by scholarships — competition is lower than for pilot awards.
ATC and Flight Dispatch: Air traffic control and flight operations officer (FOO) careers have limited dedicated scholarship coverage, but some programmes include them — Elevate Aviation covers ATC, some Indspire awards cover Nav Canada pipeline students, and the NATA Foundation award covers aviation careers broadly. Seneca College and CAE have specific aviation management and dispatch pathways worth researching directly.
Float and seaplane: Manitoba Aviation Council Wings Over Kississing Float Endorsement Scholarship combines float rating training with summer employment in northern Manitoba. BCAC awards can be applied to float-equipped aircraft in BC and Yukon in some cases.
Province and residency requirements
BCAC — training must occur in BC or Yukon. MAC — Manitoba residency and Manitoba school. Alberta AAD / Air Access Bursary — Alberta residents; Air Access is MRU-only. Northern funds — NWT, Nunavut, or Yukon residency for a specified period.
National scholarships (COPA, Ninety-Nines, Wings of Opportunity, RCAF Foundation, Elevate) can generally be used at any TC-approved school in Canada.
Age requirements
Youth (15–21): COPA Neil Armstrong (16–21), BCAC Anderson Family (15–19), MAC Fast Air (under 21).
Young adult / early career: Alberta AAD, most BCAC and MAC awards, Wings of Opportunity, college-level awards — no strict upper age, focus on “emerging aviators” or “students.”
Open age: AME, airport operations and management awards typically have no age limit.
Citizenship and residency
Most Canadian aviation scholarships require Canadian citizenship or permanent residency. Provincial awards frequently require both provincial residency and training in that province. Northern and Indigenous awards may require beneficiary status under a land-claims agreement.
Notable exception: the Rob Robichaud International Scholarship at Moncton Flight College is specifically for international students.
Applying for multiple scholarships at once
Yes — apply to as many as you qualify for. Stack national, provincial, and school-specific applications in the same cycle. The only restriction to watch: COPA does not allow previous COPA recipients to reapply for COPA awards, but this does not affect eligibility for any other programme.
